Alexander Walmsley is a filmmaker and media artist with a particular interest in the landscapes of the real and the virtual. Having originally studied archaeology, his work is informed by the ways in which technology shapes our perception of the world around us. His recent work has been concerned particularly with computer simulations and the means by which they render the Earth, a topic that is also the subject of his doctoral work at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf. Walmsley’s Tropical Depression traces 21 Southern Hemisphere cyclones (2023–24), combining found footage, text fragments and Microsoft Flight Simulator storm data to examine data-driven weather imagery.
