Alexander Walmsley is a filmmaker and media artist with a particular interest in the landscapes - both the real and virtual. Having originally studied archaeology, his work considers how technology shapes our perception of the world around us. His recent series have been particularly concerned with computer simulations and the means by which they render the Earth, a topic that is also the subject of his doctoral thesis at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf. Walmsley’s Tropical Depression traces 21 Southern Hemisphere cyclones that took place between 2023 and 2024. The series combines found footage, text fragments and Microsoft Flight Simulator storm data to examine data-driven weather imagery.
