Mons Graupius, Allegoria (2024)

The Battle of Mons Graupius is one of the first recorded battles on Scottish soil. The Caledonian tribes united to fight off Roman invaders, but despite their valiant efforts, were defeated. For more than 1,900 years, the hillside location, as described by Roman historian Tacitus, has remained largely a mystery. Photographer Andy Hay’s series Mons Graupius, Allegoria, traces the history of the area, photographing 25 sites associated with the conflict. The work reflects on the human impact of Roman imperialism, as well as its effects on Caledonian society, and how landscapes can hold onto ancient history.
