Our experience of a place is rarely fixed. The same room can feel comforting and protective one day, and confined or unsettling the next. In her photography, Annet Neijmeijer explores this shifting relationship between people and the spaces they inhabit. In OIKOS, Neijmeijer turns her attention to domestic and architectural spaces, examining how light, shadow, and perspective shape our sense of being somewhere. Her images draw attention to details that often go unnoticed, inviting viewers to consider how spaces can influence memory, mood, and perception. Light reveals certain elements while obscuring others, creating scenes where presence and absence seem to coexist. The title OIKOS comes from the Ancient Greek word for house, household, or home. It suggests a place of belonging and familiarity, while also pointing to the physical and emotional boundaries that define how we live within a space.
