Nothing Can Ever Be The Same, commissioned for Biennale Musica 2023 in Venice, is a 168-hour real-time generative film by British artist Brendan Dawes and filmmaker Gary Hustwit. Using bespoke generative technology developed for the Academy Award-shortlisted documentary Eno, the film continuously evolves, ensuring no two versions are ever alike. This living audiovisual system explores code, data and chance as artistic tools, pushing the boundaries of cinema through unpredictability and duration. Dawes, whose work is held in MoMA’s collection, blends digital and physical experiences to reveal hidden patterns. The piece premiered in Venice, and embraces the concept of continuous transformation, resisting finality in both image and sound.
