The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine prompted artist Chie Yoshida to begin censoring their own artwork. Their work explores war and freedom of expression, questioning how limiting free speech can lead towards conflict without alerting citizens to its approach. The artist sees painting as a way to preserve voices erased from history, and allow ordinary people to express their opposition to war. Yoshida’s work has been exhibited at Shibuya Hikarie; Independent Tokyo 2025; and Aichi Triennale 2019.
