Deb Covell

Black & White (2014)

Deb Covell explores the material and sculptural potential of acrylic paint. Key references include early 20th century abstraction, particularly the reductive and geometric language of Russian Suprematism. Covell, who lives and works in Teesside, has omitted the traditional fixed support of a canvas, instead creating her own paint supports – or “skins” – which she manipulates into three dimensional forms or uses as a base on which to apply geometric imagery. Covell builds up dense layers of paint onto stretched plastic sheets which are peeled off, then folded, creased, cut and collapsed until a new shape emerges.
