Mexican-American artist Deborah Lawrence Schafer employs various materials and influences to offer new interpretations of the world – from notions of identity and healing to the perceived separation between humans and the natural world. In the Corazones Cosidos project, featured here, she delves into the universal experience of emotional pain and repair. Schafer assumes an archetypal role; she represents humanity as touched by sorrow, trauma and suffering. She photographs herself in a cloak of mourning whilst navigating breathtaking landscapes. In so doing, she illustrates the coexistence of beauty and loss. Along with video, photographs and mixed media, the project includes hearts shot with a bow and arrow – then mended with gold thread.
