Demetris Koilalous

A Lebenese Notebook:
Antiparadise 2 (2011-2012)

The ruined church of St Vincent de Paul in downtown Beirut is located on the Green Line – a severely hit district during the Lebanese Civil War. The place of worship and hope was simultaneously a site of tragedy. Athens-based photographer Demetris Koilalous documented the war-damaged building, developing the concept of “Anti-Paradise” to describe the paradox of sacrifice, loss and the illusion of victory in both conflict and contemporary society. The artist’s work has been exhibited at Benaki Museum, Museum of Photography Thessaloniki, Institut du Monde Arabe, Aperture Foundation, Head On Photo Festival, Les Boutographies. He has been nominated for the Prix Pictet twice.
