Nettuno: Birth of a Shell is a 16mm digital experimental film exploring queerness as a post-human utopia and the rejection of fixed identity. Emma Scarafiotti merges cinema vérité, documentary, performance and scientific research to portray the body as a shell - fluid, shifting and open to transformation. Inspired by Paul Valéry (French poet and philosopher) and José Muñoz (Cuban-American queer theorist), the work uses the shell as metaphor, reflecting interspecies hybridity and potential reconfiguration. Scarafiotti’s practice addresses gender, mental health and marginalisation, often using multiple media to explore intimacy, fusion, and resistance. Nettuno symbolises a rupture from constrained identities toward the possibility of becoming something new.
