Since living in Mali (2009–2013), Spanish visual artist and photographer Gloria Oyarzabal has focused on colonialism, decolonisation and representations of Africa and otherness. Her ongoing project Usus Fructus Abusus_La Blanche et la Noire (2019 –present) examines ownership, restitution and reparation, questioning the urgency and feasibility of returning plundered objects and identities to colonised countries. Shortlisted for the 2024 Aesthetica Art Prize, Oyarzabal’s work challenges hegemonic narratives and the colonial legacy embedded in museums, inviting a critical debate on cultural heritage, identity and justice.
