James Tapscott is a contemporary land artist whose multi-disciplinary practice combines natural phenomena – particularly water and mist – with artificial light to create new experiences within the everyday. His art has been installed throughout Asia, Australia, Europe and the USA, inspiring audiences and winning multiple awards. Tapscott primarily works outdoors, in the public realm, and often in quite remote places. He is currently producing both temporary and permanent installations in China and the USA. Murmuration (2024) is a site-specific response to the environmental effects of mining and smelting in Taiwan. Tapscott developed a haunting sculpture inspired by a chandelier – a potent symbol of human greed and affinity for material wealth – using crystals and taxidermy wings. The resulting piece evokes a surreal, dreamlike presence.
