Past Lives (2025)

Joanna Byrne is an artist-filmmaker who takes a tactile, material, collaborative and sustainable approach to the moving-image. She combines painterly and experimental techniques within analogue filmmaking, and her current work traces themes of rewilding, ecological resilience and urban memory. Her films have been screened across the UK and internationally within galleries, cinemas and non-traditional venues. Past Lives is a multimedia environment that invites us to reflect on the history, present and future of urban spaces. Its subject is a partially derelict site in Shipley – once home to a hotel and cinema. It includes an immersive soundscape created from field recordings and creative audio experiments, as well as analogue images – hand-developed and printed with plants collected from the location. Past Lives is a dreamlike encounter with place – evoking memories and experiences embedded in the landscape.
