John Beattie

Reconstructing Mondrian (2013-2023)

John Beattie restages historical and cultural narratives through both still and moving image. Reconstructing Mondrian (2023) is a key example. The decade-long project is centred on Beattie’s documentation of Piet Mondrian’s reconstructed Paris studio (1921-1936). The body of work employs cinematic projections and large-format photographs to explore the practical, conceptual and institutional significance of this creative space, which was built by the Dutch architect Frans Postma. Past, present and future are integral to Beattie's multidisciplinary oeuvre, which provokes questions around time, history and representation.
