John Beattie restages and reconstructs historical and cultural narratives through still and moving images. Temporal concepts are integral to the making of his work, which aims to prompt or provoke questions around time, history and representation. His work has been collected by The Hugh Lane Gallery Collection and is funded by The Arts Council of Ireland. Barbara Dawson (Director of the Hugh Lane Gallery at the time) describes Reconstructing Mondrian (2023) as a decade-long project featuring cinematic projection and large-format photographs, centred on Beattie’s filming of Piet Mondrian’s reconstructed Paris studio, exploring its practical, conceptual and institutional significance.
