Everyday childhood objects are the inspiration behind Mexico City-born Jose Manuel Flores’ sculptures. The artist embraces a range of materials but primarily works with marble. He explores how volume affects space and the relationship between opposites – like the hardness of stone versus the softness of pillows or towels. He draws on childhood memories, such as clothespins, reimagined in marble to be observed from a different aesthetic perspective, extending his interest in transforming familiar domestic forms into sculptural studies of material contrast, perception and spatial balance within his practice.
