Prompted by intimate conversations and archival footage, What Does The Water Taste Like? questions the production of identity as it relates to Juliana Kasumu’s own personal affiliations as a Nigerian-British artist. It demonstrates the complex ways in which the past and present remain in constant dialogue, engaging in interpersonal speculation regarding identity production and sentiments of “home.” The film examines entanglements of “foreign” identities and the cultural mobility of knowledge throughout history. Non-linear narratives – on the subject of displacement – are part of the generational immigrant experience. Kasumu’s work presents new perspectives on the exchange of intimacy between kith and kin.
