Julie Umerle studied at Falmouth University, Cornwall, and Parsons School of Design, New York City. In her practice, she investigates materials and explores the ways in which human beings perceive images. Her recent collection of bold abstractions continues her enquiry into the parameters of geometry, colour and space. In English Red, named after an earth pigment, she develops a minimal, monochrome, hard-edged composition. The piece centres a main architectural form, which stands out against an expanded, open background that gives it a strong sense of space and focus.
