Bactereature (2024)

Junpeng Liang and Weixi Kuang are a London-based artist duo working across material research, biodesign and speculative design. Their practice combines computation, fabrication and cultivation to translate living processes – pigmentation, diffusion and growth – into sculptural forms and design narratives. Moving between laboratory and studio, they build “readable systems” where surfaces become time-based archives, reflecting on human–nonhuman cohabitation and the cultural ethics of emerging technologies. Their collaborative work Bactereature encodes microbial behaviours as algorithmic rules in ceramic 3D printing, producing porous structures and cultured pigments that act as evidence of process. Installed as a public experiment, it examines agency, authorship and care in nonhuman systems.
