Karen Russo

Junkerhaus (2021)

Bodies, landscapes, buildings, matter and memory constantly interact and merge in Karen Russo’s films. The Jarman Award-nominated filmmaker blends documentary and speculative fiction to explore how histories are shaped and rewritten, and how our understanding of the world is informed by knowledge, experience and culture. Sinkholes (2025), for example, is set in a world where rain has ceased, transforming the real receding landscapes of the Dead Sea into a vision of humanity searching for water amid the ruins of its own making. Junkerhaus (2021), meanwhile, is filmed in the home of Karl Junker, a sculptor who dedicated his life to building his house in Lemgo, Germany. Elaborate woodwork carvings cover the floors, furniture and corners – creating a "fascinating yet oppressive" effect. The moving-image piece is a psychological portrait filled with abstract reflections, projections and light, all captured on 16mm.
