Not Breaking. This Wave Drowns Hate (2025)

Kat Austen is fascinated by how humans and environments interact and become part of each other. Austen's installations and performances are rooted in sound, sculpture and ecological research, often drawing on site-specific field recordings that convey the "wild and visceral connectedness" between people, landscapes, technologies, waters and other species. Not Breaking. This Wave Drowns Hate (2025) envisions more sustainable ocean futures in the face of climate crisis. The installation continuously re-envisions images, which are projected onto sail cloth from a traditional Irish sailing vessel. Technology is central to the project. It includes a prototype "Symbiophone", which translates microplastics into sound, and employs an AI agent trained on images created by local portside community members in Galway. They work together to generate visions for human-sea relationships centred on remediation and mutual growth.
