A Window to a Future of an HIV Vaccine (2015)

website

A trimer is a delicate, mushroom-shaped structure on the surface of the HIV virus. This structure helps it invade cells and avoid detection by the immune system. Katharine Dowson was drawn to the intricate architecture of something destructive but also beautiful. Here, she has depicted its microscopic complexity in eight laser etched glass blocks. The cubes represent the dispersed yet interconnected efforts of scientists and laboratories across the world to develop a HIV vaccine. One stands alone, a metaphor for their continuing quest.
