Kazuaki Koseki photographs the brief light of Himebotaru, a species of firefly native to Japan, moving through summer forests at night. The series was developed through years of observation in Yamagata. It explores not only ecology and habitat, but also how light, fear and wonder are remembered through perception. Rather than isolating a single moment, Koseki condenses repeated flashes, movement and sensation into one image. The fireflies’ luminous traces evoke both the fragility of life and the vulnerability of the environments they inhabit – suggesting a world that is fleeting, endangered and yet still alive with enduring hope.
