Med Selkies (2022)

Kelly Ann Buckley is a UK-based sound artist and composer working under the moniker K-A-B. Drawing on a background in journalism, multimedia arts and songwriting, she creates audio-visual works rooted in field recording, narrative and ecology. Her award-winning film Med Selkies emerges from an ongoing engagement with past, present and speculative environmental futures. It weaves myth with ecological reality, bridging scientific understanding and ancestral knowledge through sound-led storytelling. Inspired by human adaptation to rising sea levels and the Aquatic Ape Theory – a debated evolutionary hypothesis suggesting that early human ancestors may have gone through a semi-aquatic phase – the work imagines a world in which plastic-eating microbes, ancestral hauntings, and selkie-like figures emerge from the wreckage of human industry
