Kenichi Shikata's works have appeared in parks, ports, open fields, the heart of cities and public spaces. The artist studied architecture at Waseda University, and now creates geometric sculptures and installations as "devices" for reading places and understanding the world. Moving beyond site-specificity, his practice incorporates "condition-specificity" – responding to changes in the environment, as well as the presence of people, nature and buildings. Shikata has exhibited at Echigo-Tsumari Art Field and Tokyo Biennale, and his permanent installations can be found at MIYASHITA PARK, Tokyo, and Osaka International Airport. Meeting of Your Light is part of a series shaped by gravity, where small variations in material and placement generate different outcomes. It asks wider questions about community: how a collection of “individuals” inhabits a place, and how they help compose the spaces around them. This idea can be mapped onto larger scales – from families to cities and nations.
