Kin (aka cell_less), a PhD artist-researcher at the University of Newcastle, is interested in the notion of "digital fatalism" – the psychological and cultural resignation that algorithmic systems, AI and Big Tech are inevitable, uncontrollable and irreversible. Her multi-screen video installation Dissimulation is an exposé of the hidden labour that goes into making Artificial Intelligence, looking specifically at the experience of click-work and data-labelling – which is outsourced by hugely profitable US companies to low-paid, precarious workers. She examines the "black box" of AI, using generative images and clickworker testimonies to interrogate hidden labour, dataset ethics and the concealment of human agency within automated systems.
