Lena Kaapke creates sensory environments that invite viewers to think about space and mapping. Working with ceramics in a conceptual way, she combines a strong understanding of clay with its long history as one of the oldest art forms. This ongoing engagement with her material continues to shape her practice and new work, highlighting the role ceramics can play in contemporary art today. Growing Absence is a series of reliefs that maps the decline of Hardangerjøkulen, one of Norway’s largest glaciers. Their forms are reminiscent of map lichens (Rhizocarpon geographicum), whose growth indicates the absence of ice on the Hardangervidda plateau, where the glacier is located.
