In 2018, artist Lisa Murray experienced a near fatal accident. On a downhill slope, her child put his feet through the spokes of their bicycle and together, they were thrown over the handlebars. “My mothering instincts took hold – I wrapped my arms around my baby, taking the impact of the pavement with my head. I woke in a stranger’s arms and later discovered that my baby came away virtually unscathed.” For Parts Not Working uses photographs, collage and textile-based forms to explore trauma, memory and the brain’s protective processes through lived experience. Murray’s work has been recognised by Lens Culture, HeadOn Photo Awards, PhotoLucinda, Gomma and the Australian Photography Awards.
