Exploring personal experience through documentary photography, Maisie Lopez creates raw and emotionally charged storytelling in her practice. Good Grief examines the death of her father, using the camera as a tool for healing and providing a therapeutic space, enabling Lopez to revisit places holding traumatic memories. The project challenges the conventional narratives of grief; presenting it as a spectrum, whilst addressing the complex emotions that come with the death of a parent. In I was only a child, from this project, Lopez explores the complex combination relief and mourning following her father’s death in 2023, using phototherapy to revisit childhood memories and invite empathetic reflection.
