Exploring personal experience through documentary photography, Maisie Lopez creates raw and emotionally charged storytelling in her practice, based in Bristol, UK. Good Grief examines the death of her father, using the camera as a tool for healing and providing a therapeutic space, enabling Lopez to revisit places holding traumatic memories. The project challenges the conventional narratives of grief; presenting it as a spectrum, whilst addressing the complex emotions that come with the death of a parent. In I was only a child, from this project, Lopez explores relief and grief following her father’s death in 2023, using phototherapy to revisit childhood memories and invite empathetic reflection.
