Nana Miyagi is a Japanese artist based in Scotland. Living abroad has influenced her practice, prompting reflections on identity, cultural belonging and the shifting of existence over time. Although she studied Nihonga (Japanese painting, focusing on formal methods and drawing from nature), her practice has since moved in a more conceptual direction. She is interested in the philosophical and visual significance of marks left, unintentionally or peripherally, during the artistic process. In Intimacy and Rejection/親密と拒絶 , she explores language barriers through panels combining English and Japanese letters reflecting intimacy and alienation in communication.
