Searching for a Place to Belong (2025)

Olana Light is a multidisciplinary artist based in Portsmouth, UK, and a Goldsmiths MFA graduate. Working across sculpture, performance and moving-image, she explores the intricate relationship between humans and the natural world. The idea of belonging – how we both shape and, are shaped by, our environment – is central to her work. Through performances in public spaces, Light invites audiences into inclusive “we-worlds” (places where everyone is welcome), beyond the limits of a traditional gallery. In Searching for a Place to Belong, she documents herself wearing sculptures made from natural materials, including dandelions. The ongoing photography project investigates the connections between women and the organic world, and asks: what does it mean to be part of nature? Over a 96-hour period, Light documented how the dandelions slowly opened, revealing the passage of time, cycles of renewal and the delicate balance between permanence and impermanence.
