Poppy Tilbury takes a deep dive into pop culture – or, as she calls it, “Pop’s Culture”, in a playful nod to her own name. Her practice is an amalgamation of varied interests: media, celebrity, film and imagery. Tilbury uses oil paint to achieve a soft, blurry, dream-like image – how you might remember a movie still, photograph or video through a moment of nostalgia. She draws inspiration from Hito Steyerl's "Poor Image" theory, and works to stylise pixelation into something dreamy. In doing so, she challenges the conventional hierarchy of digital images – joining together what might be perceived as ‘lowbrow’ pop culture, with highbrow artistic expression.
