Ryan Williams works at the intersection of art, whakapapa (genealogy) and identity, using his practice as a reflection of self. Williams is a whakapapa Māori artist from rural Te Waipounamu, Aotearoa (New Zealand), and he explores the constraints imposed by colonial histories through monochromatic oil studies. Now based in Hanover, New Hampshire, Williams continues his artistic practice at Dartmouth College. His series Introspections into the Self was developed prior to his move to the USA and draws on in-depth explorations of ancestry and positionality within the context of decolonial thought.
