Steve Messam

Lantern (i) (2024)

Steve Messam is a British environmental artist renowned for his large-scale, site-specific installations that transform and reimagine everyday environments. His ephemeral artworks, often described as “bigger than a house,” interrupt familiar settings, from rural landscapes to historic buildings. Lantern (i) comprises two large teardrop-shaped forms, each between 4m and 5m in height. The public are encouraged to walk around them and experience the scale and colour within the space. The shapes are illuminated by internal LED lights, bathing the gallery in colour. Here, Messam inspires audiences to perceive and interact with their surroundings in new and thought-provoking ways.
