WoonHyoung Choi addresses themes of death and failure in her paintings, examining the tension between control and the inevitability of loss. Series such as Shroud, Death Sentence, Tomb and Committing Suicide explore these ideas, with Committing Suicide drawing understated humour from easily overlooked texts. In 2026, she began Birds Dreaming Of Flight, which reflects on frustration, failure, challenge, dreams and hope. Choi holds an MFA from Yale University and is based in South Korea. Her practice returns breath to painting through an engagement with death, transforming it into a space for reflection on loss, endurance and fragile hope.
