The empty plinth is a potent symbol of contested public space, asking questions about our collective histories. Who, and what, do we put on a pedestal? Monumentalise by artist Yuen Fong Ling comprises eight short films that explore what happens when performers encounter empty plinths from Sheffield’s Collections. The project reflects Ling’s active interest in using archives and collections to tell stories – coalescing the past to speculate on the future. Monumentalise was supported by UAL’s Decolonising Arts Institute 20/20 Project, Sheffield Museums, Sheffield Hallam University and Lumo Films.
