London-born and based Caroline Jane Harris responds to universal experiences of nature, capturing visual phenomena found in all levels of existence across time and cultures. The fragility of her hand-cut pictures is analogous to not only anxiety around the dissolution of physical images in the digital realm, but perpetual innovation and destruction in the Information Age. A Stopped World derives from online videos featuring volcanic eruptions that were screen-captured before enlarging, printing and cutting them out in pixelation. These large-scale spectacular phenomena have become compressed, turning disasters into distractions. This speaks to our mediated experience of nature’s sublime effects.
