Yoshiyuki Katayama is a video artist and naturalist based in Japan. He began his career in 2003 as a graphic designer after studying at Nihon University, College of Art, Department of Cinema. The Umwelt series represents his inaugural venture into the realms of life and time, a theme he has passionately pursued since 2014. In this body of work, he employs the time-lapse technique to capture the evolution of plants, which is then composited with slow-motion insect imagery. The term "umwelt," derived from German, translates to "environment" or "surroundings," encapsulating the distinctive realm experienced by individual organisms.
