Hussina Raja is a British Kashmiri artist, filmmaker and actress. Her practice is rooted in social justice. Using film, photography, installation art, archive footage and performance, she explores social constructs of reality, re-envisioning existing narratives, with a focus on notions of bicultural identity, migration and belonging. Her work examines the emergence of subcultures in shaping politics and popular culture. Roots questions what it means to be British, and surveys the experiences of immigrants who have adapted their identities to fit in with the cultural norms of a new society. The film is a reflection of Raja's life as a second generation South-Asian Brit. She surveys the process that migrants must go through in order to be accepted, and questions at what stage an immigrant becomes integrated as “one of us.”
